Professor onboarding

Welcome to Humans But Guided. HBG helps you give students faster, clearer feedback on written work—without handing grading over to AI alone.

You stay in charge. HBG drafts scores and feedback from your rubric and instructions; you review, edit, and approve before anything reaches a student. Every change is recorded, so you can see what the AI suggested and what you decided.

What HBG gives you

Faster feedback — Students get thoughtful responses sooner, which helps them revise while the assignment is still fresh.

Your standards, not generic AI — You define the rubric and grading instructions. The AI follows your criteria, not a one-size-fits-all template.

Guidance before submission — With self-paced learning turned on, students can check their work against your expectations before they turn it in.

A clear audit trail — When you adjust a score or rewrite feedback, HBG keeps both versions. Nothing is silently overwritten.

Help from your team — Invite course assistants to share setup and review work inside the same course.

How it works at a glance

Think of setup as happening in one direction, and review in another.

Before students submit: build your course, write the assignment, finalize your rubric, connect a grading setup, then turn on self-paced learning when you're ready.

After students submit: read AI-generated evaluations, edit what needs changing, and use audits when you want to see how feedback evolved.

Course → Assignment → Rubric → Grading setup → Self-paced learning → Evaluation → Audit

Configure grading before opening the assignment to students. Once submissions arrive, your job shifts to review—not rebuilding configuration from scratch.

Your first steps

The professor workspace shows Next up steps that mirror this path. Work in order, or skip ahead when you've already finished an earlier step.

  1. Get access — Sign in and complete any waitlist or approval step your institution requires.
  2. Set up your workspace — Create a course and add assignments. See Workspace.
  3. Design a rubric — Define what "good work" looks like and finalize your criteria. See Rubrics.
  4. Build a grading setup — Connect your rubric to the AI instructions HBG will use at grade time. See Grading.
  5. Enable self-paced learning — Open the student experience when configuration is ready. See Self-paced learning.
  6. Review and audit — Read AI output, adjust feedback, and track changes over time. See Audits.

Tips for a smooth start

Finalize your rubric before grading setup. The rubric is the foundation—the AI instructions build on criteria you've already locked in.

Review AI instructions before go-live. HBG drafts analysis and feedback instructions for you. Read both sets and tweak wording while you still have time.

Turn on self-paced learning only when you're confident. Students can submit as soon as it's enabled, so treat that step as your "we're ready" checkpoint.
